A customer recently wrote to us and asked:
“What is that bowl of seeds by the door?”
Great question!
This bowl of seeds is called mukhwas. It is traditionally eaten after dinner to aid in digestion and freshen breath. Nirvana’s mukhwas is a simple recipe of plain fennel seeds with a few candied fennel seeds mixed in for color and sweetness, but there are many variations of mukhwas which can also include coconut, anise seeds, sesame seeds, sugar crystals, and essential oils. We encourage you to scoop a spoonful of seeds into your hand and pop them in your mouth as you exit so you can enjoy the benefits Indians have been enjoying for centuries!
Want to try making your own mukhwas at home? You can buy prepackaged mukhwas on Amazon, or try these recipes on website link below. Most of the ingredients are simple and can easily be found in your local grocery store’s spice aisle.
Be sure to let us know how your experimentation goes!
